Improving CRVS systems to protect human rights [Video]

Dimitri Sagna-UNECA

Dimitri Sanga is the Director of the Regional Office for West Africa of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA). In the video below (in French), Mr. Sanga indicates that it is very important that in 2018 we improve CRVS systems which are the basis for identifying individuals.

According to him, CRVS systems are very important nowadays because they allow us to collect data on individuals and help us guarantee their rights, i.e. the right to an identity, the right to be protected and the right to access social services. When individuals can be identified, it is easier to protect their rights, regardless of the country they come from.

This is mostly important in cases of conflict and other forms of emergencies, where we see cases of refugees and internally displaced people that cannot be identified and therefore cannot be granted access to education, health, and other social programs.

The international conference on innovations in Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems was held in Ottawa on 27-28 February, 2018.
